Buyers Tip
When buying a website, don't get emotionally attached to the sale.
Always look at a sale objectively and ask yourself "Where is the revenue coming from?" and "If it is so great, why is he/she selling?"
Sellers Tip
When selling a website, build up a relationship with your buyers.
Always talk via PM's. It builds up the number of interactions you have with your buyer which, research has shown, improves trust.
It also leaves the buyers to imagine what stage you are up to in negotiations with other buyers!
Finding a website to buy
Finding websites that are for sale is actually quite easy. There are so many different website marketplaces on the internet. However, knowing the best will save you a lot of time. Here are the best places to buy and sell websites.
Direct Contact
The best way to buy a website is to directly contact the owner of a worn down site and ask them if they are looking to sell.
With a direct contact, you're not competing against other buyers, so you may be able to get a better price.
Sitepoint Marketplace
The best marketplace is the sitepoint marketplace. Sitepoint is broken up into three areas, startup websites, established websites and premium websites.
- The marketplace is setup so that all of the important information is listed. For example, in the startup websites, the seller must disclose if the content is unique. In the premium websites, the seller must talk about the revenue and traffic details.
- Has a great feedback system
- Has a validation system so you can verify if the owner does actually have access to the site
BuySellWebsite
BuySellWebsite say they are the biggest website marketplace, but they are definitely lacking in the "feature" department.
Unlike Sitepoint, they don't have a forum where the seller can answer questions, and they don't have any way to verify that the seller is real. It's still worth a look though because they do have a lot of sites on there.
Other Marketplaces
A quick search on Google reveals tons of other website marketplaces.
Forums
Digital Point have a forum devoted to the buying and selling of websites.
Buying a site over a forum is good, but because the listings are free, you tend to get a higher concentration of dodgy sellers.
When buying from any source, always be aware of the dangers.
Found a website?
That's great! Now it's time to begin the negotiations.
